In this video Chuck is turning a bowl blank on the lathe. A bowl blank is a cube of wood cut so that the grain runs perpendicular to the rotation axis. You do not want wood pith (the wood at the very center of the log) in your bowl. Pith is the oldest part of the tree and has a greater tendency to crack. Typically, if your finished bowl contains pith, it will eventually fail.

In order to make a bowl blank from a log, we first cut the log lengthwise with the grain and through the middle section to remove the pith. These half logs are squared up and cut into manageable blocks for bowl blanks.

Bowl blanks are roughed out on the lathe. This removes enough of the material to allow the bowl wood to dry, but also allows enough material so the bowl can be finish shaped at a later time. Chuck likes to let the rough-cut bowls dry slowly, so he packs them back into the shavings that he cut from them. If a rough-cut bowl dries too quickly, it will likely crack.

After these rough-cut bowls dry, Chuck will come back and do a finish turning followed by a wood finish of his choice to complete the project. If you are interested in bowl blanks from Pennsylvania hardwoods, please contact us at Pioneer Mountain Homestead.

Just Another Day at the Homestead

It’s always an adventure, folks! Thought we’d share a little insight into one of our many mishaps at the homestead.
Seems like most of our stories end with “and then we got a chain out…”. If you want to homestead and have equipment, you will eventually experience one of these scenarios: a break down; a stuck machine; running out of fuel or gas; smoke from something that shouldn’t smoke;
not starting when it should; a tow or jump start will be necessary; tires will go flat; rust, scratches, and dents magically happen; or any of many other issues.

Honeybees and Therapy?

Fun Fact: Apitherapy (or “bee therapy”) is the medicinal use of products derived from the honeybee. This includes honey, pollen, royal jelly, propolis, beeswax, and bee venom.

At Pioneer Mountain Homestead we have a bee yard where we keep several hives. We are fascinated by the bees and the systems they maintain. The bees help us by pollinating fruits and vegetables, as well as providing us with honey. We do our best to look after the bees.

On the stack this week is a load of hickory that we’ve milled into boards. Really nice grain. The hickory is priced at $3.00 per board foot for widths up to 10” wide. If it’s over 10” wide, it is $4.00 per board foot.

Walnut roughcut lumber for sale-Project boards.

We heard our hobby woodworkers and we are trying to accommodate! Most sawyers will only cut a log that is 8’ or longer. That means that even if you are only needing a small piece, you must buy the entire 8’ board. Well, we have been sawing shorter logs for those of you who need smaller pieces for your smaller projects. These boards give you the ability to work with hardwoods at an affordable price while not accumulating an excess stock of leftover wood. Most of our shorter logs are around the 4’ length.

We run a sawmill at Pioneer Mountain Homestead. The walnut is priced at $5.50 per board foot for up to 10” wide and $6.50 per board foot at pieces over 10” wide. Log Arch Prototype

This is the first trial of the log arch. Chuck and his brother, Mike, came up with this log arch design and manufactured the prototype. It is still being tested, but so far, so good.

We believe the log arch will be the perfect fit for retrieving small loads of logs. We are hoping that with the log arch we will no longer need to haul heavy equipment to sites for small loads and this will save us time and money.

More videos are on the way, so stop back. We will also be doing videos showing some of the details in case you are a “do-it-yourselfer” that wants ideas on how to manufacture your own log arch.

We have a small truckload of hickory that we milled into rough cut boards. This has some beautiful grain. I wish we would have gotten more! I splashed some water on the one piece so you can really see how the grain pops! The hickory is priced at $3.00 per board foot for widths up to 10” wide.
