These are a wonderful way to start seeds. At our homestead we have many of these for the variety of plants we start. The best part is that they are reusable! After transplanting, we soak the trays and covers in very warm soapy water and rinse. Scrubbing is minimal. The plastic is not super thick, but we have been using them for two seasons and there has been no degradation in the quality.
The tools that come with them are okay in our opinion, but we don’t often use them. The small shovel-like tool is really the only one we use regularly, and it helps to remove the tender plants while holding the potting soil around them.
One of the best features of this tray is the lid. This keeps in moisture (which is so essential for starting seeds) and it has an adjuster on top so if it is too moist in your environment, you can adjust. The lids separate the trays into their own small growing centers and although we haven’t had many bug issues, we feel it would help reduce spread if we did have an outbreak.
It does come with tags for labeling your plants, however we also don’t use these as we have our own system that we have used to years (it’s our “don’t break what is working approach”). However, for a small scale grower they would be awesome. They are made of sturdy plastic and are reusable. I would probably use permanent marker on them if I was using them for labeling.
Overall, we give these trays “two thumbs up” and will be purchasing more this coming season.
