I found this product on Dig + Co. and wanted to share with everyone as I’m a big believer in using products that are not toxic (and preferably organic). While the FDA approves many different dyes for ingestion and skin application, there is a lot of controversy about the safety of the dyes. There is speculation that some dyes cause hyperactivity and behavioral problems (particularly with children).

While it may be true that if guidelines are followed the dyes are safe, the question then becomes at what level? What is the safe zone of dye exposure in accumulation? In order to not find out, why not just avoid as many dyes as possible?

Which, brings me to why I am loving this egg coloring kit. It is made with natural and organic ingredients. (Genius!) Plus, you get to throw in a little gardening lesson with the kiddos by planting grass seed in what appears to me to be a bio-degradable container (zero waste!). Grass seed usually sprouts in days so even those with short attention spans (including me) get to see their work germinate in only a few days.

The manufacturer is located here in the USA in Portland, Maine (another thumbs up from me). Recommended age group for children is 6+ years.

As a side note, if you are going to paint eggs, don’t forget to support your local farmers and purchase your eggs locally. Even though most people think of painting eggs at Easter, why not try this during other times as well. It would make a fun arts and crafts project for anytime without the worry of exposure to potentially harmful chemicals. – Bren
