Pleasant Hill Grain is a new affiliate for us.  We are SO EXCITED to be working with them.  They offer some of the products we have used for many years, as well as products we have on our “wish” list.  They have provided us this link for you to get free shipping on orders over $75.

One of the items that you really need to check out is the Berkey Water Purification System.  We currently utilize two of these at the homestead.  We have used them for over 20 years and with the exception of occasionally replacing filters and small easily replaceable parts, these are still going strong and in great shape.   Good water is critical to life.

Pioneer Mountain Homestead February 2021

It is February 1, 2021 at the homestead and this month met us with a snowstorm. The weather man had been calling for a storm later in the week with 1-3 inches of snow. However, the storm came in early and decided to circle our valley several times dumping ten inches of snow.

We love the snow and the beauty it brings, but the juggling act that is required when it snows can be daunting. Adding to the pressure of clearing the snow was a list of firewood orders to be delivered. As the day progressed, it was apparent that the amount of snow was going to severely limit deliveries. Not only did we have to get out our long lane, but we had to be able to deliver, and customers had to be able to receive the loads. Luckily, we have considerate customers and were able to reschedule everyone’s’ loads and provide those people first that needed wood the most. In our Appalachian Mountain region, many people still rely solely on firewood as their only source of heat.

The snow also affected our regular daily outdoor activities. Animals are fed in the morning and late afternoon/evening. The farm dogs are always first, followed by the farm cats (strays that found their way to our barn), the chickens, ducks, and goats. We currently have two young male dogs that are full of energy and need constant watching.

The ducks are amusing in the snow and seem to love being in it. They have been at the farm about two years now, and the females give us an egg nearly every day. Even in the winter months when the chickens take a break due to the low number of light hours, the ducks still produce. The ducks and chickens are temporarily housed in a super calf hutch that is attached to a chain link kennel. We let them free range during the day and return to their housing area at night.

By the way, we do sell duck and chicken eggs. Check our website for information or text us. We can have them ready at the end of the lane for your pickup, so you won’t have to navigate our long lane.

Since we will not be doing firewood or mill work this snowy day, Chuck takes to clearing our long lane. He first starts with the wheeler with a plow attachment and quickly upgrades to the skid steer.

You never know what Mother Nature will throw at you, but always make the most of what you are given. Thanks so much for your support and make it a great day!

REDIRECTED Major Changes Happening at the Homestead

REDIRECTED Major Changes Happening at the Homestead

In December 2020 we decided to give Pioneer Mountain Homestead a makeover.  We were finding inefficiencies in the way we were working at the property and decided to do a major overhaul.  The sawmill business was outgrowing its space.  The goats were outgrowing their space, and the raised bed gardens were showing deterioration and in need of some costly repairs.  It was time for changes to occur especially since we want to expand what we do.

We will be adding a new sawmill building and lumber storage building.  When this is complete, the sawmill will be moved to its new location so that the existing sawmill building can be renovated for the new goat barn.  Once we complete the new goat barn, the existing goat barn will be converted into Chuck’s new woodworking shop.

In the meantime, the garden area will be expanded to 5,000 square feet.  This required us to remove the existing raised beds.  Around the raised beds, a new horseshoe-shaped pasture area will be erected.  Having the pasture surround the garden on three sides will hopefully deter the deer from eating the garden, but time will tell if this methodology will work.

All these projects required a large amount of site preparation work.  Trees and tree stumps needed removed, drainage needed to be addressed, areas needed to be leveled for the new buildings to be built, and shale was brought in to keep the build sites and driveways from turning into mud.

We started the site work in late December 2020 and it went into January 2021 so we had to address weather issues such as snow, wind, ice, and cold temperatures.  Additionally, both of us work and live at the property, so there are farm tasks to manage, sawmill and firewood orders to fill, our vacation rentals, plus other job-related activities to conduct.  It has been a very busy January 2021, but we are hopeful that it will come together and be well worth it in the end.  Days are long (14 hours minimum/7 days a week), but we are firm believers that if you really want something you need to work to make it happen.  Although, we must admit that we enjoy the process every step of the way so it never seems like drudgery (unlike the corporate jobs that we left behind).

We will be keeping video journals of our adventures to share with other like-minded individuals.  We consider ourselves do-it-yourselfers and we are very much into self-reliance and self-sufficiency.  We would love to hear from others who share similar interests.  Please send us a message if you have any questions as to why we do things the way we do.  Our contact information can be found on our website:  https://www.PioneerMountainHomestead.com

As always, thanks for your support and make it a great day!
