This is a great book if you like to read short bite-sized chapters.  Each chapter is a history of a particular vegetable variety.

If you are into heirloom varieties and like to know the history of your favorite vegetables, this book is for you.  The author has carefully selected only 100 varieties and also includes information for those with culinary interests.

I found the book very interesting.    – Bren

We are full time homesteaders at Pioneer Mountain Homestead in the Appalachian Mountains of south-central Pennsylvania.   We have a sawmill, produce garden, honeybees, layer hens, laying ducks, pigs, and goats. We provide boat and camper storage to nearby visitors of Raystown Lake and sell firewood and lumber in south central Pennsylvania.  Our journey is to be as self-reliant as we can be; to live as much as we can from the resources we have at hand; to effectively be productive with as minimal environmental impact as possible; to raise food in an organic manner; and to give back to our community through education or demonstration. We are always learning, as well. Life is always an adventure! We enjoy learning from others and seeing what other people are doing as well.  – Bren and Chuck

This is a link to the 9th edition.  We have the 7th edition and LOVE IT!  That said, comments here are about the 7th edition, but we assume the newer edition is even better.

If you are someone who likes charts and details, this is your book.  The author has definitely done some research which is evidenced by the huge bibliography and resource list.  An interesting feature of the book is the detail that the author goes into regarding soil, soil preparation, compost, and fertilization.  There is a section to help you plan your garden and an entire chapter dedicated to companion planting.

If you want to understand the grow biointensive method for sustainable gardening, start with this book.  This is one book that belongs in your gardening library.

This is the revised edition.  It was first published in 1978.  We do refer to this book often, however, some of the information is outdated and some of the recommended products for use on an organic garden is not current common and possibly not correct practice.  It still is a valuable addition to our library.  Sometimes just having information of how things were done prior to modern times is interesting.

The book is wonderful for explaining many self-sufficiency skills relating to homesteading or gardening.  The book also is wonderfully illustrated.  John Seymour’s books always have some of the best illustrations.
