This Herbal is a wonderful reference book.  There are five main sections: holistic approaches, practical herbalism, the herbal, systems of the body, and useful information.  I mainly use the herbal section as a quick reference.  The illustrations are great.  The Herbal section gives a summary of each herb, lists the botanical name, what parts of the plant are used, uses of the herb, preparations of the herb and dosages.

The layout, illustrations, and quick summaries of each herb make this a book that belongs on every homesteader’s shelf.

We are full time homesteaders at Pioneer Mountain Homestead in the Appalachian Mountains of south-central Pennsylvania.   We have a sawmill, produce garden, honeybees, layer hens, laying ducks, pigs, and goats. We provide boat and camper storage to nearby visitors of Raystown Lake and sell firewood and lumber in south central Pennsylvania.  Our journey is to be as self-reliant as we can be; to live as much as we can from the resources we have at hand; to effectively be productive with as minimal environmental impact as possible; to raise food in an organic manner; and to give back to our community through education or demonstration. We are always learning, as well. Life is always an adventure! We enjoy learning from others and seeing what other people are doing as well.  – Bren and Chuck

Gaia’s Garden is one of my very favorite books on permaculture.  I have read and re-read this book multiple times.  Everything is perfect about this book:  the images, diagrams, charts, and detailed explanations.  The author has gone into great detail regarding design of gardens and guilds.  Explanations on how to work with nature abound throughout the book.  Topics include soil remediation, inter-plantings, attracting beneficial insects, water conservation, guild plant functions, and more.  If you want an overall understanding of a small-scale permaculture garden, this is your book.  I highly, highly, (like 6 out of 5 stars) recommend this book.

If you purchase this book, tell me what you think.  I’m curious.  I have a lot of books that I “like”, but this is one I truly treasure.  I would like to know if you enjoy it as much as I do.  –Bren
