Cotton Pot Holders

At our homestead we go for the “no-frills” just get the job done items.  These pot holders are definitely a daily use item and they are perfect for any homesteader.  They are cotton, washable, and as basic as can be.

To be honest there are a variety of pot holders out there, but I keep coming back to the simplest design.  I have tried the silicone pot holders, the terry pot holders, the oven mitts, the oven gloves, and the pocket style pot holders and I just keep coming back to the old stand-byes.   Just give me the simple padded squares.  I believe someone once said that this is the “KISS” approach….”Keep It Simple, Stupid”!

Honeybee Apron

I do not personally own this apron, however it is a good example of everything I look for in a good apron.  To be honest, most of my aprons are hand made or personalized gifts from friends.  However, this apron is making my “want it” list (and what homesteader can honestly claim they have “enough” aprons)?

The reasons I like this apron are as follows.  First, I like that the straps at both the waist and neckline are tied.  That allows for a better fit.  I don’t like aprons where the neck line is so long that the front panel drapes.  Second, this apron has pockets!!!!  I cannot stress enough how pockets are so handy on the homestead.  Third, the fabric is a durable cotton twill which will wash and dry well.  Lastly, I just love the design and color.  As a beekeeper, this suits my personality.

Cotton Dish Cloths and Dish Towels

Cotton Dish Cloths and towels

At our homestead, the kitchen is the most utilized room of the house.  We are always baking, canning, or cooking.  However, we are very conservative with disposable products like paper towels.   That is why we choose to use items we can wash and reuse like these cotton dish cloths and towels.

I prefer cotton dish cloths to the new microfibers (maybe I’m “old fashioned”).  I like the feel of them and their ability to clean surfaces.

You can never have enough dish cloths or dish towels.  I will share a secret.  I also use dish cloths and towels to wrap my empty canning jars in totes to store for the next canning season.  They keep the jars chip free, and I like the fact that I don’t waste paper or plastic packing material.

I also prefer to have an ample supply so I can wash them all together at once in a separate laundry load.  For kitchen items, I generally will wash them with the hottest water possible to sterilize them for my kitchen uses.
