There are so many varieties of onions to choose from. Here is a list of some of the ones we’ve tried and would recommend. (For reference, our homestead is between Zones 5 and 6).
Bianca Di Maggio onion seeds produce a beautiful flat shaped sweet flavorful onion. These are great to slice into your canned chow chow, or use them fresh in potato salad or macaroni salad. Also great if sliced and put on a salad, burger, or sandwich. – Bren

These onions are a beautiful purple color. They are a smaller onion and I often find that I need to use multiple ones for a single meal, however, they are worth it. This is a proven variety that we’ve grown in the past. Many people have remarked at how good they are. Whether for personal use or for market growing, we highly recommend this variety. – Bren

This is an heirloom variety that are cold-hardy (perfect for our area) and disease resistant. This variety gives us the slender spring onion that we love. – Bren

These are beautiful slender pink colored onions. I chose this variety for two reasons: taste and appearance. One thing I like to do is showcase vegetables that have unusual appearances. This not only starts conversations with customers and visitors to the homestead, but also educates consumers that not all vegetables have the same appearance. In our commercialized world, most people only recognize the global shaped white onion. It’s refreshing to show that other shapes and colors exist…and they’re delicious!
I love these in potato and fresh green salads. They are also supposed to be good storage onions, but they never last that long for me. They are just too good to put away for later. – Bren

This is a newer variety for us. We always grow a “keeper” onion (that’s what we call the long-term storage onions). This is a nice sized onion with thin stems for good drying and storage (we found that thicker stems hold moisture that causes rot). – Bren

Ruby Red onions are a nice sized red onion that stores well. I like the flavor. – Bren
