As a homesteader that gardens and raises Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats. I am always trying to add additional feeds to supplement my animals. In addition to providing hay, grains, minerals, and salt, I like to give my goats “treats” every day. This may consist of a pile of weeds from the garden or sliced up apples, sunflower seeds, cut up carrots with tops, beet tops, leftover salad greens, etc. (As a side note, these are SUPPLEMENTS to their regular feed and not REPLACEMENTS).
One of the types of foods I have always wanted to try with my goats is mangels. Mangels, which are also called fodder beets, will provide extra fiber, protein, calcium, phosphorous, Vitamin A and Vitamin E to my goats.
So, I am delighted to find these seeds from Dig + Co. for Organic Brigadier Golden Sweet Fodder Beets. I plan to try these and will report back how it goes. These seeds are also good for us two legged creatures, so I will be eating a few myself to see how I like them.
Live fodder is essentially any type of fresh plant material that is fed directly to livestock. This can include grasses, legumes, fruits and vegetables. The key advantage of feeding live fodder to goats is that it provides a source of fresh, nutrient-dense food that can help to supplement their diet and promote optimal health.
I plan to cut the beets into chunks as this is what my goats are accustomed to with other foods I give them. Cutting the produce to bite sized pieces seems to get the goats to eat more and waste less. As with other supplements, I will also gradually introduce the fodder beets so as not to upset their stomachs.
I wanted to share this information with other like minds so you can try them as well. Let me know if you try the seeds and what you think. Even if you don’t have goats and try them for your own consumption, I want to hear from you.
As always, Make It a Great Day! – Bren
