The Stanley Jack Plane No. 5 is a must-have tool for any woodworker looking to quickly remove stock, true boards, and produce fine finishes. I currently use a similar jack plane that I use at our homestead workshop, and I can attest to the versatility and usefulness of this type of tool. (Mine is similar, but it is an old model).
The No. 5 model has a 2” cutter width, which provides ample surface area for removing material efficiently. The frog and cutter seatings are machined to eliminate blade chatter. Blade chatter is a common issue with some hand planes. Eliminating blade chatter results in a smoother cut, and extends the life of the blade by reducing wear and tear.
One of the features I look for in a plane is the design. This Stanley Jack Plane No. 5 is designed to prevent clogging. Clogging occurs when shavings build up between the blade and the workpiece. This will cause the blade to stop cutting. This plane is designed with this issue in mind.
The length of the Stanley Jack Plane No. 5 provides ample leverage for removing material quickly, while still being compact enough to maneuver in tight spaces. This will be beneficial in both roughing out rough lumber and fine-tuning your workpiece.
I like my Stanley plane and this similar Stanley Jack Plane No. 5 would be my choice if I had to replace mine with a similar plane. The Stanley brand has served me well.
